Privacy Policy

Overview

Expense Tracker is designed with privacy in mind. Your financial data is stored locally on your device. We do not have our own servers and do not store your personal financial information. When you use AI features (optional), aggregated spending summaries are sent to Google Gemini for processing — see the "Google Gemini AI" section below for details.

Data We Store on Your Device

All of the following data is stored locally on your device in an SQLite database. It is never uploaded to any server.

• Transactions: Amount, date, category, and optional notes you enter
• Categories: Custom category names, colors, and icons you create
• Smart categorization hints: Keywords the app learns from your usage to suggest categories
• Settings: Theme preference (light/dark/system), currency, and language

No account creation or sign-in is required. No bank linking or cloud sync is used.

SMS Access

The app includes an optional feature to automatically detect bank and UPI transaction messages from your SMS inbox. This feature:

• Is off by default — you must explicitly enable it in Settings and grant the READ_SMS permission
• Only reads messages matching bank/UPI sender patterns (e.g. HDFCBK, SBIINB, UPI alerts)
• Processes all SMS entirely on your device — no SMS content is ever uploaded or transmitted to any server
• Stores only the parsed transaction details (amount, merchant, date) in your local database — the raw SMS text is not retained
• Can be disabled at any time from Settings > SMS Tracking

We do not collect, store, or share any SMS content outside of your device.

Camera Access

The app includes a receipt scanner feature that uses your device camera to extract text from receipts. All text recognition is performed on-device using Google ML Kit. Photos taken or selected are processed locally and are never uploaded or transmitted to any server.

Camera access is only used when you explicitly open the receipt scanner.

Third-Party Services

Google AdMob

We display ads through Google AdMob to support free access to the app. AdMob may collect certain device and usage data as described in Google's Privacy Policy. This may include:

• Device identifiers (advertising ID)
• IP address
• General location (derived from IP)
• App usage data related to ad interactions

You can opt out of personalized ads through your device settings: Settings > Google > Ads > Opt out of Ads Personalization.

Google Play Billing

The app offers in-app purchases and subscriptions through Google Play Billing:

• Ad-Free — one-time purchase to remove all ads
• Pro — monthly or yearly subscription for AI insights, unlimited chat, and receipt scanning

Purchase and subscription transactions are handled entirely by Google Play. We do not collect or store any payment information. Subscriptions auto-renew until cancelled. You can cancel anytime from Google Play > Subscriptions.

Google Gemini AI (Pro / AI Insights)

The app's AI features (weekly reports, overspend alerts, chat) use Google Gemini API to generate insights. When you use these features, the following data is sent to Google's servers for processing:

• Aggregated spending summaries (category totals, weekly/monthly averages) — NOT individual transaction details
• Your question text (for AI chat)
• Currency and language preferences

This data is processed by Google under their Gemini API Terms of Service. We do not store any data on our own servers.

Firebase Analytics

We use Firebase Analytics (Google Analytics for Firebase) to understand how people use the app so we can improve it. This service collects anonymous usage data including:

• Screens visited and navigation patterns
• Feature usage (e.g. which features are used most, button taps)
• App events (e.g. transactions added, categories created — counts only, no amounts or details)
• Device information (model, OS version, screen size)
• General location (country/region derived from IP address)
• App version and session duration

This data is anonymous — it is not linked to any personal identifier and does not include your financial data (amounts, notes, categories, or transaction details). Analytics data is processed by Google under their Privacy Policy.

You can opt out of analytics data collection by disabling "Usage & diagnostics" in your device settings: Settings > Google > Usage & diagnostics.

Firebase Crashlytics

We use Firebase Crashlytics to collect anonymous crash reports to improve app stability. This may include device model, OS version, and stack traces. No personal or financial data is included in crash reports.

Data We Do NOT Collect

• Personal identifiers (name, email, phone number)
• Financial account information (bank accounts, card numbers)
• Location data (GPS)
• Contacts or call logs
• SMS content sent to any server (SMS is only read locally for transaction detection when you opt in)
• Individual transaction details sent to external servers (only aggregated summaries for AI features)

Data Sharing

We do not sell, trade, or share any of your data with third parties. The only third-party data collection is by Google AdMob as described above, which can be eliminated by purchasing the Ad-Free upgrade.

Data Retention & Deletion

All data is stored locally on your device. You have full control:

• Delete individual transactions within the app
• Clear all data by clearing the app's storage in your device settings
• Uninstalling the app permanently deletes all associated data

We retain no data on any server.

Children's Privacy

This app is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect any personal information from children. AdMob is configured to comply with applicable regulations.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Changes will be reflected by updating the date at the top of this page. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance.
